New Delhi: On Tuesday, the central government informed the Supreme Court that students who returned to India from Ukraine will be offered a single chance to clear the MBBS final, both Part I and Part II examinations.

The center informed SC that students have a year to clear the exam and that they can take Part I first, followed by Part II after a year. Only once Part I has been completed will Part II be accepted.

The government further disclosed to the highest court that the theory examination can be held physically and centrally, following the format of the Indian MBBS examination, and the practical examination will be held by some specified government medical institutes, which were given the task.

According to the center, the committee has made recommendations regarding how to deal with the problem of students who have gone to Ukraine or China to pursue medical education but have returned in their penultimate year and have continued their studies online after returning. However, these new recommendations are in accordance with the previous court order.

The top court had previously advised the central government to create a transparent framework and a platform for the evacuated medical students from Ukraine to air their grievances and request authorization to continue their education in India.

The Centre testified before the Supreme Court that it had taken proactive measures to help Ukrainian returnee students after consulting with the National Medical Commission (NMC), but added that sending these students to colleges in India would seriously lower the quality of medical education in the nation.
